BEST PLAY:Only opinion I have here is that
reasons to be pretty does
not win, mostly because I am informed it's "sexist tripe written by a man who has never once written a positive or even believable female character". And, you know, I trust Steph on these subjects. That said, I haven't actually seen or read it myself, so, yanno. *shrug*
BEST MUSICAL:Here I really want
Next To Normal to win. I'd be okay with
Billy Elliot, though, just so long as
Shrek or
Rock of Ages does not win. I think N2N is beautiful and amazing and heartbreaking (and having grown up with a schizophrenic mother, I relate to it). I haven't seen much of
BE, but I'm open to it. I haven't seen
Shrek or
RoA, but I've seen ENOUGH.
BEST BOOK OF A MUSICAL:This is the only category
[title of show] is nominated for, so of course I want Hunter to win this. Although, I won't be TOO disappointed if
N2N wins it. Still. I'm a [tos]ser, and the show is so inspirational and wonderful, and they deserve it.
BEST ORIGINAL SCORE (MUSIC/LYRICS):Again
N2N. I'm not gonna bash the other ones, cause I haven't actually heard them, and they might be wonderful (I mean, for all I know
Shrek COULD have wonderful music). But
N2N is absolutely gorgeous.
BEST REVIVAL OF A PLAY:No clue. I mean, I've heard good things about
Waiting For Godot, but that doesn't really affect this Tony since it's best REVIVAL. But I am glad they've reconsidered and decided to televise this category!
BEST REVIVAL OF A MUSICAL:HAIR so hard it's not even funny.
Hair Hair Hair Hair Hair. If this loses, I may lose my faith in the Tonys. Honestly, in this category, there just is no competition.
BEST SPECIAL THEATRICAL EVENT:...Yeah, no clue?
BEST PERFORMANCE BY A LEADING ACTOR IN A PLAY:Here I have to go with
Raúl Esparza in
Speed-The-Plow out of pure loyalty. Cause, yanno, it's Raúl, and I don't know or care about the other people. And Raúl is overdue for a Tony.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY A LEADING ACTRESS IN A PLAY:Again, don't care. No opinion or knowledge.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY A LEADING ACTOR IN A MUSICAL:Gavin Creel in
Hair. Definitely. I mean, I adored Hanke in the show, and then Gavin went and topped him amazingly. Beautiful singing, amazing acting, I love what he's done with the role, I love how well and completely he plays it, and he doesn't really get boring. (I also love him as a person and his idealism and devotion to changing the world for the better.)
I'll forgive them if the Billys win, cause those kids do an amazing job. And I'd root for J Robert Spencer, if he weren't up against such tough competition. If Constantine wins, sorry, I'll lose my faith in Tonys. Unless he's somehow gotten miraculously better than he was in Rent.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY A LEADING ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL:I like Sutton in general, but hasn't she gotten enough for a while? The other ones, I don't know, but besides having a terrifying smile,
Alice Ripley does an amazing job. I'll be surprised if she doesn't win, but won't necessarily be terribly upset.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY A FEATURED ACTOR IN A PLAY:BEST PERFORMANCE BY A FEATURED ACTRESS IN A PLAY:BEST DIRECTION OF A PLAY:No clue.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY A FEATURED ACTOR IN A MUSICAL:I'm gonna have to go with
Will Swenson in
Hair. While I don't really fangirl him, mostly cause I think he's sort of.. dull outside of the show, he does an incredible job in the show, and his energy and humour as Berger is awesome. And there's the fact since he's not really like that, it makes the performance much more impressive. And I love how he plays Berger's vulnerable moments, like Berger doesn't know how to handle it, and you can see the hurt on his face, but then he tries to cover it with a joke and a fake laugh. And I love that.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY A FEATURED ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL:I have to say
Jennifer Damiano in
N2N, but I won't be terribly upset if she doesn't win. I can't really judge the other ones, but I do know that Jen does a wonderful job.
BEST DIRECTION OF A MUSICAL:Diane Paulus for
Hair. I love her devotion to the show, how she's played out this show in her head her whole life, how she tries to re-imagine it and just... Her work on the show is brilliant. It's amazing, and I love it. Second choice is of course
N2N.
BEST CHOREOGRAPHY:Karole Armitage for
Hair. The scenes are gorgeous and intricate, the way they all seemingly randomly weave through each other perfectly and naturally... Everything looks so impulsive and natural, but having seen the show 8 times, I know that it's just perfectly choreographed. And they're hippies dancing around in a park, it's not supposed to look choreographed, so it's perfect. The way they move around is just awesome. Although, the dancing in
BE is gorgeous...
BEST ORCHESTRATIONS:Next To Normal, I guess? Not a category I feel strongly for, but you know, I'm rooting for the show. Mostly cause
Hair isn't in this category.
BEST SCENIC DESIGN OF A PLAY:BEST COSTUME DESIGN OF A PLAY:BEST LIGHTING DESIGN OF A PLAY:BEST SOUND DESIGN OF A PLAY:*shrug*
BEST SCENIC DESIGN OF A MUSICAL:The sets for
Next To Normal is awesome, simplistic, makes good use of the space, and, you know. Is cool. Again, don't feel very strongly.
BEST COSTUME DESIGN OF A MUSICAL:Michael McDonald for
Hair. I know it's up against
Shrek, which if nothing else has impressive production values. But Shrek is not very inventive costume design, it's all based on the movie, and also looks very silly to me.
Hair's costumes are beautiful and original and individual. They work so well with the characters, and there is not one costume piece in there that I would not wear myself.
Plus, Michael is a sweetie and has given me like 5 hugs. Alos, his costumes are anthropomorphic. I quote, "costumes have feelings too", and he says they get upset when their actor is sick and they don't get any play. And he named John's scarf Grizabella. So, you know, I'm a little bit biased because of his awesome.
BEST LIGHTING DESIGN OF A MUSICAL:Gonna go with
Hair. The lighting is beautiful and breathtaking. I wouldn't be too upset if
N2N won either, because they're both done by
Kevin Adams. I'd prefer
Hair, but so long as he wins, I'm okay.
BEST SOUND DESIGN OF A MUSICAL:I know almost nothing about sound design, so I'm just gonna go with
Hair. I heard just as well in lotto as in standing room as in the orchestra, so I can't complain. Of course, the same can be said about
N2N, which I only saw from back of the mezz, and still caught everything.
DONE.SO. Those are my thoughts on the Tony awards. Thoughts?
I won't be watching the telecast, as they don't show it here. I WILL be watching all the online stuff (assuming it lets me), which means I get the creative awards, and the Thank-You camera and the Red Carpet arrivals. And will be watching Twitter and discussing on MSN with people who are watching.
